Debate grows on overall benefits of "eating local"
I have to admit that I've been feeling rather guilty about buying food that doesn't come from within 100 miles of where I live. The small but growing "locavore" and "slow food" movements are telling me I'm the devil for buying food that comes from California, or worse, somewhere in Central America. "Reducing our Carbon Footprint" is often touted as a main benefit of getting food locally. And it seems logical that transporting a carrot 20 miles as opposed to 1,000 miles would be more eco-friendly, right. And there's the "connection" with the people that grow the food you eat. Not so fast, some say. A few researchers say you also need to factor in things like water use, harvesting techniques and the means of transportation into the equasion. And that it's very elitist and expensive for the consumer. The differing points of view are all leading to a very interesting discussion. For one look at the debate, you might want to check out this story that ran in the Chicago Tribune recently. And while I can't argue that a locally-grown tomato tastes a whole lot better and is much fresher than the commercially-grown variety, whether it really makes a huge difference environmentally does not seem all that black and white to me. Or maybe I'm just trying to justify eating grapes in the winter. What do you think? Leave us a comment (be nice, now, ya'll). . .
